Deadwood and Disappointment

We were off this morning to Crazy Horse Memorial.  They wanted us to pay $10 each to get in when we could see it from the road so being the cheap travelers we are, we turned around took some photos and left.  From there we headed north to Deadwood.  On the way we stopped at a little 50's place that we read about called Boondocks but it was our second disappointment for the day.  Not even as cute as the Nostalgia store we stopped at the other day.  We drive on and of course we are in the Black Hills.  The scenery is very pretty and we came across a couple of lakes that were beautiful and we stopped and took some pictures.  When we pulled into Deadwood it was just not what we expected to see.  We parked in a parking garage where the guy in the car next to us was sleeping in his car.  We walked around and it just seemed that all the vendors and store owners where out to get the last buck they could get from everyone today.  All of the places reeked of smoke and almost everyone of them had a casino in the front..even the restaurants.  We just didn't like it so we did eat at a place called Mustang Sally's and then walked through a few more shops then got in the car and headed to Mt. Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried.  After that we drove to Sturgis since this was the last day of the huge bike week and festival and it was only 15 miles from where we were.  The weather started to change and got stormy, windy and cold.  Sturgis was packing up the city until 2014 and most of the bikers are gone.  We came back to Deadwood since this is where we are staying tonight and Kay and I started working on photos and blogs and Debbie went to the casino attached to the hotel.  She is doing well since she invited Kay and I to dinner at the buffet and she bought dinner!  We  had planned to do laundry tonight but this Hampton doesn't have a laundry and the "lady" at the front desk was not so nice about anything.   I am finishing the blog, Kay is back from her walk and Debbie must still be winning since she hasn't come back yet.  I am not getting any service on my phone since the Badlands yesterday.  We have pushed a lot into the first five days of this trip and I am tired and heading to bed.  Tomorrow is one of our longest drive days as we drive to Billings, MT which is a bit over 6 hours from here.  There probably won't be much to write about tomorrow but you never know with us.

We took pictures of it from the road.

  1. Well I finally found your blog. I have to be retrained periodically to stay up to speed. Truth be told I forgot you were doing one. In my mind I thought that wa juston your cruises. Anyway glad you mentioned it and I found it. Lots of great pictures and descriptive writing. I assume you didn't go to see Field of Dreams in Iowa. I would like to see that someday as I liked the movie. Hope you have a great Monday and I'll follow the blog regularly now.
    Have fun.

PS you better start spelling Sturgis with an I not you if you want to be a Biker Babe.
